Pixar shares trade lower despite 'The Incredibles' opening at number one at box office

Although its latest film "The Incredibles" was the highest-grossing film this past weekend at the box office, shares in Pixar Animation Studios traded lower Monday.

"The Incredibles," the latest computer-animated film from Pixar and distributed with Walt Disney Pictures, opened to favorable reviews on Friday and grossed nearly $71 million over the weekend. The film is about a family of superheroes called back into action.

Shares in Pixar (traded on Nasdaq: PIXR) fell $5.20 (6.16%) to close at $79.25 after trading on Monday. Speculation has been that "The Incredibles" may not have the lasting power of previous Pixar films due to its more mature nature.

In addition, Pixar has already produced five major hits with "Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc.," and "Finding Nemo," and there have been additional worries that the studio's streak of box office and critical hits may not last for much longer.

Pixar's next film "Cars," set to be released November 2005, is expected to be the final film distributed with Walt Disney Pictures, unless a deal is made soon between the companies.
