The Disneyland Report > Disney News > Ryan Palmer Wins Funai Classic at Walt Disney World Disney NewsRyan Palmer Wins Funai Classic at Walt Disney WorldLAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. A legendary name in golf Palmer has returned to the top echelon of the PGA TOUR. But this Palmer is a 28-year-old TOUR rookie from Grapevine, Texas, named Ryan not the guy from Latrobe, Pa., with the first name Arnold and a storied professional career. This Palmer's pro career has just begun. A "graduate" of the Nationwide Tour in 2003, Ryan Palmer scorched the Funai Classic field with a blistering 10-under-par final round Sunday at Walt Disney World Resort to claim his first PGA TOUR victory. He equaled the best closing round in the Classic's 34-year-history to rush from five strokes back. In the process, he out-dueled defending champion Vijay Singh, the world's current No.1 golfer, and 142 other pros vying for shares of a Classic-record $4.2 million purse. Palmer shot 22-under-par 266 for the four rounds, three strokes better than runners-up Singh and veteran Briny Baird. Palmer earned $756,000 for the victory. Palmer started the final round in a 10-player logjam for 13th place, five strokes behind Baird and Tom Lehman the latter playing in the final twosome for the third straight week on TOUR. Palmer climbed up the leader board with birdies on five of his first six holes on the front nine of Disney's Magnolia course, then took command with a string of four birdies from No. 14 through No. 17. Palmer becomes the 15th player to earn his first TOUR victory in the Classic. Most recently, Bob Burns notched his maiden win in the 2002 edition. The final-round 62 matched performances by John Huston in 1992 and Duffy Waldorf in 2000 that similarly propelled them to come-from-behind victories.
