Goblins headline Florida's fall calendar

By Jay Clark
The Chicago Tribune

As scary as they were, even the hurricanes can't stop the spooks from swooping over Florida this month. Nor have the storms interfered with a raft of other fall activities ranging from art shows to a new role-playing park for kids.

Universal Orlando's popular Halloween Horror Nights, for instance, is bigger than ever this year. It opened the first of the month, and remaining dates are Oct. 13-17, 21-24 and 28-31. It features seven new haunted mazes, four scare zones, a parade populated with mutants and misfits, goblins and ghouls.

Walt Disney World's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is also on track. It also opened the beginning of the month, and remaining dates that aren't sold out are Oct. 12, 14, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 and 29. Sea World's Halloween Spooktacular runs for three weekends, Oct. 15-17. 23-24 and 30-31. It is not a separate event but included in regular park admission.

Remaining nights for Busch Garden's Halloween-themed Howl-O-Scream in Tampa are Oct. 14-16, 21-24 and 29-31. It features six haunted houses, four scare zones and fiendish folks like Dr. Freakenstein.

October's also the month for Key West's big Halloween blowout, Fantasy Fest. A week of street fairs, masquerade balls and costume competitions are on tap during this major festival, which takes place Oct. 22-31.

Also a major draw in October is Walt Disney World's Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, expanded to run two weeks longer this year. More than 100 wineries offer tastings, and 250 chefs conduct culinary demonstrations during the fete. The festival runs to Nov. 14.

Disney also is opening a new attraction, Stitch's Great Escape, in the former site of the Magic Kingdom's Alien Encounter this fall.
