But for Mickey Mouse fans Bob and Marilyn Murphy, the mouse is a beloved member of the family. The Murphys are such avid Disney lovers, in fact, that they designed a nine-foot head of Mickey Mouse in the center of their brick paver patio at their new home in Yorkville. They are co-presidents of the Illinois chapter of National Fantasy Fan Club, an organization of Mickey enthusiasts. They have decorated their home with much Disney memorabilia. But it's the Mickey Mouse patio design that they're perhaps most proud of. "The Murphys have certainly created one of the most unique and talked-about homes in the neighborhood," said Barry Mayworm, the founding president of Cardinal Homes, the builder. The Murphys recently moved into their one-level house. They are enjoying getting to know their new neighbors and becoming acquainted with the neighborhood. The empty nesters also spend a great deal of time with their children and grandchildren, since they now live even closer than before. They wanted to downsize from their 4-bedroom, 4-bath house in Woodridge. "But we didn't want to give up our personality and the things we treasure -- including our love of all things Disney," said Bob. "We love to travel to Disney World and Disneyland a few times a year," Mary said. With all of the Disney decor and memorabilia on display throughout the home, the Murphy grandchildren get a taste of Disneyland every time they visit grandma and grandpa.
