Disney Princess Power Crowns New Generation

In case you hadn't heard, Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are as hip as ever.

Around the globe, the next generation is discovering the stories and tales that are as thrilling today as when first created by Walt Disney. And those traditions are being made even stronger by the addition of new and exciting characters.

The Disney Princess line of apparel has enjoyed success by combining popular classic favorites - such as Snow White and Cinderella - and a more recent addition to the Disney library, Jasmine from Aladdin.

Princess-themed breakfasts at the Walt Disney Resorts worldwide, which began in 2002, today are often sold out months in advance According to a recent article in The New York Times, "in Japan, 20,000 mothers and daughters this year paid $150 each to attend seminars where they learned to drink tea like, well, princesses." Inspired by the success of the Disney Princess line, Disney is now creating a Disney Fairies line, including books and a direct-to-video movie.

It's a genuine phenomenon. As the Princesses demonstrate, classic Disney characters possess an enduring appeal to successive generations. This appeal is the basis for the introduction of new and compelling products, and Disney has repeatedly been able to provide fresh, exciting offerings by expanding upon the proven success that has made the company and its characters global icons.

Celebrities are sporting Mickey Mouse tee-shirts, and Minnie will be featured on designer clothing due to hit the market this fall.

But the excitement is not limited to the classics. Disney has developed popular new characters as well.

The W.I.T.C.H. book series tells the stories of five "ordinary" girls with "extraordinary powers." Global monthly sales of W.I.T.C.H. comics have averaged over 1 million copies a month this year, and a television program is in development for Europe and the United States.

For nearly half a century, the treasures of The Walt Disney Company have been rediscovered by generation after generation. And by combining some of the classic and some of the new, Disney is making certain that the magic is just getting started.
