Walt Disney World Hurricane Jeanne update

Hurricane Jeanne weakens to a tropical storm as it continues to batter Florida

Hurricane Jeanne weakened and was downgraded to a tropical storm as it traveled up the Florida peninsula after it made landfall on Saturday.

The devastating hurricane has forced the evacuation of many Florida residents, and millions may be without power due to knocked down power poles.

Former hurricane warnings for Florida's west coast from Englewood to the Suwannee River were downgraded to tropical storm warnings, according to the National Hurricane Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Hurricane warnings for certain locations on Florida's east coast were dropped as well.

Tropical Storm Jeanne is now moving northwest at a speed of about 10 miles per hour, and wind speeds are reaching up to 70 miles per hour at the worst areas of the storm, the NOAA advisory noted.

The projected path of Hurricane Jeanne is up Florida and then through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

The theme parks and water parks of Walt Disney World, as well as Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and Busch Gardens in Tampa, were closed on Sunday due to Hurricane Jeanne. The closures were made to ensure guest safety.

Despite the Walt Disney World closures due to Hurricane Jeanne, the hotels remained open, and extra entertainment, including characters and movies on the in-room televisions, was brought to the hotels to accommodate those stuck indoors on their vacations.

A weather webcam offered by the Swan Hotel at the Walt Disney World Resort offers a fascinating look at the current weather and hurricane conditions in Orlando. The time-lapse option allows for a video of hurricane conditions in the last 24 hours, and they show trees being whipped around by the high winds, as well as very heavy rain at Walt Disney World.

Walt Disney World damage due to Hurricane Jeanne has not been reported at this time.
