Occupancy rates the week of Aug. 14, the week following Hurricane Charley, were up about 13 percent from a year earlier. Properties reported even bigger increases during Frances and Ivan. But attractions from the Magic Kingdom to Gatorland were closed several days. A SeaWorld Orlando spokesman acknowledged that the storms had hurt attendance but said business is picking up, giving rise to hopes that people are postponing rather than canceling their vacations. Last week, executives with the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau launched a public relations blitz, appearing via satellite on local news shows in New York and 18 other key markets. "The story is we're all open for business," Disney spokesman Bill Warren said. "We're trying to break through the hurricane coverage so people will know that." The picture is bleaker along the coast. Hurricane Frances pounded Volusia County earlier this month, ripping apart the roofs of dozens of motels along State Road A1A. Disney's Vero Beach Resort in Indian River County also sustained minor damage. It reopened Sept. 13 but closed Friday to prepare for Jeanne. To read the rest of this story, click here.
