Olympic Swim Champs Draw Enthusiastic Crowds to Local Natatoriums

By Lori Johnson

If the sport of swimming needed a savior, he appears to have come in the form of Olympic Gold Medal Champion Michael Phelps, who performed before packed houses at both the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD and Carroll ISD natatoriums last week.

Phelps, the first athlete to win eight Olympic medals [six gold, two bronze], was in North Texas last week along with several of his medal-winning teammates from the U.S. Olympic squad.

Together, they’re traveling across the country as part of the Disney “Swim With The Stars Tour,” which has scheduled a dozen stops from Florida to California. Phelps and his gold medalist teammates Lenny Krayzelburg and Ian Crocker were on hand for an impromptu morning performance that took place in Grapevine before taking part in the Southlake presentation, which had been booked well in advance. The morning performance was arranged as part of Disney’s Outreach Program, with similar performances scheduled at upcoming tour stops. The nationwide tour that highlights the swimmers’ unparalleled accomplishments began Aug. 31 at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and will end at Disneyland Resort in California.

The Carroll event, which was used as a fundraiser, quickly sold out the show scheduled from 7-9 on Sept. 17, bringing about the decision to add another show, which preceded the originally scheduled program.

Both events were packed, as guests heard Phelps, Crocker and Krayzelburg in a motivational presentation filled with expert tips and encouragement, accompanied by a demonstration of the swimming skills that earned them gold medals. The show was filled with special insight into the stars’ races and strokes, including some demonstrations and a race among the three stars.
