The Disneyland Report > Disney News > Olympic champs pay a visit Disney NewsOlympic champs pay a visitPhelps, Crocker, Krayzelburg make dreams come true in ArvadaBy Joshua Lindenstein, Camera Sports Writer ARVADA A couple hundred Arvada elementary school students lined the entrance to Arvada's Apex Center Monday, squealing like Britney Spears was about to walk the red carpet. However, it was gold medalists, not gold record artists, who emerged
from the tour bus. The trio treated the awestruck students, who were chosen to come to the event through various contests at their schools, to some motivational tidbits, technical swimming tips and a relay race that included three swimmers from the Jefferson County Swim Team and one Olympian on each team. For Kiana Carter, 13, one of the those in the relay, rubbing elbows with her heroes was just a preview of her master plan. "Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah," the Moore Middle School student said. "I hope to make it to the Olympics in 2012. Just sitting there next to them and talking to them was just awesome. My whole entire team is big fans of them." Promoting swimming and inspiring kids to achieve their goals is the idea behind the bus tour, which has been visiting different cities across the country since August, when the athletes returned from Athens. The Olympians took part in a question-and-answer session in which they divulged secrets ranging from swimming advice to whether they were fans of Mickey Mouse when they were children (Krayzelburg admitted he's still a big Mickey fan.). After the relay race, the young swimmers were awarded Mickey Mouse-shaped gold medals and gathered autographs and photographs. To read the rest of this story, click here.Return to Disney News. |
