Olympic champs will make a splash at Moby

Michael Phelps, winner of eight medals at the Athens Olympics, and fellow U.S. gold-medalist swimmers Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelburg are making a stop Sunday in Fort Collins as part of "Disney's Swim with the Stars" 12-city tour.

"Just to see somebody that they watched for seven straight days on national television who was honored with eight medals, six of them gold, in person, is quite an opportunity," said John Mattos, Colorado State University's swimming and diving coach for the past 25 years.

"They'll get to be up close and personal and actually get a chance to see them in a facility they're familiar with."

The program is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at CSU's Moby Pool on the east end of the Moby Arena building. Organizers with Octagon, the sports promotion company in charge of the tour, could not be reached for comment Wednesday. The tour stopped in Chicago on Tuesday and was due in Dallas today.

But Mattos and parents of swimmers on the Fort Collins Area Swim Team said the Olympic swimmers will get in the pool and swim relays and individual events. Some of FAST's 14-and-under swimmers, to be selected by lottery, will join Phelps, Crocker and Krayzelburg in the pool during the event.

"It should be fun," Mattos said. "It's too bad we can't seat more than 700, because it's an awesome way for people to see these swimmers."

The tour began Aug. 30-Sept. 4 at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and wraps up Oct. 2-4 at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. Other stops have been in Marietta, Ga.; College Park, Md.; Hempstead, N.Y.; New York City and University Park, Pa. Remaining stops after Fort Collins are scheduled in Salt Lake City; Seattle and Santa Clara, Calif.
