Swimmers tour country for Disney

After their victories last month in Athens, Michael Phelps and his fellow Olympic medalists Lenny Krayzelburg and Ian Crocker have been touring the nation with Disney’s “Swim with the Stars” and demonstrating their swimming skills for students along the way.

At the Loyola College of Maryland Friday morning, Debbie Phelps, a Baltimore County schools administrator, helped introduce “her baby” and the other two Olympic champions to hundreds of students from Riverview Elementary School in Lansdowne.

The students serenaded them with “We are the Champions” by Queen and asked them questions about their achievements, reading habits and why they got into swimming.

Phelps said his two sisters got him into it.

“I fell in love with it and was lucky enough to turn pro at 16,” he said.

The Olympic swimmers then dove into the pool to demonstrate basic swimming strokes and teamed up with students to compete in a relay.

While not all the young swimmers were ready for the pressure, the experienced relayers were ready to help. When 8-year-old Tyshell Brown-King, a member of Krayzelburg’s team, faltered, he jumped in and carried her on his back across the pool.

“It was fun,” she said. “It felt like one of those serpents.”
