Disney and Pixar's Cars is number one film at box office for second weekend

Cars, the latest release from Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures, grossed an estimated $31.2 million this weekend, making it the number one film for the second weekend in a row, according to early reports from Reuters.

Pixar's new animated film Cars debuted last weekend at number one, earning more than $60 million. This week's estimated box office return marks a 50 percent drop in revenue, which according to industry watchers say is typical for a summer film.

The summer film season is warming up, with new competition this week from films Nacho Libre, Garfield's A Tale of Two Kitties, The Lake House, and Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. However, Cars managed to stay on top despite the new competition.

The Pixar film has to date amassed more than $114.5 million in domestic ticket sales. Despite the 50 percent drop-off, earnings are expected to hold steady as more students begin their summer vacations, according to reports.

Cars tells the story of a celebrity racecar, Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson, who gets stuck in a small town on Route 66. There, he meets a host of eccentric yet friendly cars who teach him to slow down and see life in a different way.

Directed by John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug's Life), Cars is Pixar's seventh feature film distributed by Disney. The Walt Disney Company purchased Pixar earlier this year, and Pixar will continue to produce animated films under Disney.
