Hong Kong Disneyland Resort to build second theme park

The Disneyland Report

A day after Hong Kong Disneyland debuted to the general public with a grand opening ceremony, Walt Disney Company chairman George Mitchell said that a second theme park would be built at the resort.

No specific theme was announced, although a Hollywood/movies theme akin to Disney-MGM Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort or Walt Disney Studios at Disneyland Resort Paris is a popular choice, especially with Hong Kong as a major movie making city in China. According to Forbes.com, land reclamation work for the new park has already begun and construction should begin in 2010.

The Walt Disney Company hopes that by building a second gate at Hong Kong Disneyland, the resort will become a multi-day destination; the hope is that visitors to the resort will stay for more days, bringing additional revenue from hotel and restaurants, as well as ticket sales.

The company has utilized this strategy in its other resorts: Walt Disney World has four theme parks, Tokyo Disneyland Resort and the Disneyland Resort in California both opened second theme parks in 2001, and Disneyland Resort Paris opened a second gate in 2002.

Plans for the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort had already indicated land set aside for expansion in the form of a second park, but Disney has previously remained quiet regarding those plans.

A second park at the resort would also help reduce crowding at Hong Kong Disneyland park, which on busy preview days has had hours-long lines due to its smaller size and fewer rides. The park has already been criticized for having too few rides, and the talk of a second theme park even as the first has not been "completed" with a day's worth of attractions has concerned some industry watchers.
