Hong Kong Disneyland opens with traditional Chinese ceremony

The highly anticipated Disney theme park and resort Hong Kong Disneyland opened officially to the public on Monday, bringing the magic of Disney to new audiences in China.

The opening included celebrations featuring Chinese pop stars and a ceremony in front of the park's Sleeping Beauty Castle. Walt Disney Company executives including Disney CEO Michael Eisner and CEO-elect Bob Iger were on hand, along with Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong.

The ceremony featured lucky dragon dancers and traditional Chinese music and performers over a stage of red. Red is a lucky color in Chinese culture.

Fireworks and confetti created an explosive finale to the Hong Kong Disneyland opening celebration. The park then opened to visitors at 1 p.m., a lucky time predetermined by a feng shui consultant.

The planning of Hong Kong Disneyland included much consideration for the lucky placement of environmental elements as determined by the ancient Chinese concept of feng shui.

Hong Kong Disneyland is the Walt Disney Company's second theme park resort in Asia. Tokyo Disneyland in Japan opened in 1983 and features two theme parks.

The Walt Disney Company hopes Hong Kong Disneyland will popularize its brand with the Chinese and is looking at the possibility of a second theme park resort in China, possibly in Shanghai. The company seeks greater profits from a new market.
