Four year old boy dies after riding Epcot thrill ride Mission Space at Walt Disney World

A four-year-old boy died Monday afternoon after riding the Mission: Space thrill ride at the Epcot theme park in Walt Disney World.

The boy was reported as unresponsive when medical teams arrived at the ride, and the child later died at a nearby hospital.

The ride was immediately closed, but an investigation by the Orange county Sheriff’s Office ruled that the attraction was operating normally. Mission: Space reopened on Tuesday.

The cause of death is pending investigation.

Mission: Space, an intense $100 million ride that simulates a flight to Mars, opened in at Walt Disney world in 2003 and has proven to be popular with guests. However, the thrill ride has sent numerous individuals to the hospital for treatment.

Walt Disney World also added motion sickness bags to the attraction due to riders feeling ill. Mission: Space uses centrifuge technology to simulate the G-forces experienced by astronauts during launch and flight through space.

However, the experience can be intense, and signs and notices throughout the ride’s line and exterior warn potential riders to be free from heart and back problems, as well as other conditions that may be worsened by intense experiences, such as high blood pressure or pregnancy.

The Epcot death is the second Walt Disney World death this year. Earlier this year, a woman died after riding Pirates of the Caribbean at the Magic Kingdom park, but her death was due to a preexisting condition, investigators said.
