The Disneyland Report > Disney News > Disneyland ride vehicles donated to Smithsonian museum to honor Disneyland's 50th anniversary Disney NewsDisneyland ride vehicles donated to Smithsonian museum to honor Disneyland's 50th anniversaryDisneyland goes to Washington DCIn a ceremony today at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., Michael Eisner, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, donated several objects to the museum in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland in California. Michael was joined by several children from the Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center daycare and the one-and-only, Mickey Mouse. Among the donated items are vehicles from two of the park's opening year (1955) attractions: "Dumbo the Flying Elephant" and the "Mad Tea Party." The Dumbo and Tea Cup arrived in Washington earlier this week and were given a quick tour of the city before being delivered to the Museum. The attraction vehicles donated today reflect the blend of imagination, technology and business acumen that makes up American entertainment. They join a rich collection of entertainment objects in the museum, including the ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz," and Jim Henson's Kermit the Frog. The museum already holds sketches of "Steamboat Willie," an early iteration of what would become Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney's vision contributed heartily to the foundation of the American entertainment industry. His innovative theme park allowed him to translate his iconic characters and stories into three dimensional, real-life experiences that transport park visitors into their beloved movie settings. Over the years, the vision has been expanded upon to include 11 Disney theme parks and resorts, a cruise line and seven vacation clubs. Source: Press Release Return to Disney News.
