The Disneyland Report > Disney News > Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland Disney NewsBuzz Lightyear Astro Blasters opens in Tomorrowland at DisneylandBy The Disneyland Report staff Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, the newest ride at Disneyland and part of Disneyland's 50th birthday - The Happiest Celebration on Earth - opened Thursday after weeks of soft openings and cast member previews. The Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters official opening date was March 17, 2005. The attraction is based off of the Buzz Lightyear backstory from the Toy Story films from Disney and Pixar. Disneyland opened Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters with a opening ceremonies featuring a host of Toy Story characters, including the character favorite Buzz Lightyear, for whom the attraction is named. With a blast of green confetti, the doors to the attraction opened and allowed eager guests a chance to help Buzz Lightyear defeat Emperor Zurg. Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is a slow moving "dark ride" through scenes, much like the Fantasyland rides. The ride system utilizes Disney's Omnimover ride system, which allows for a high capacity for guests. The new Buzz Lightyear ride at Disneyland is also an interactive experience for guests, who use the laser guns onboard the ride vehicles to shoot targets placed strategically around the show scenes. When certain targets are hit, special effects and movements are set off within the attraction. A similar attraction with the same name of Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters
opened last year at Tokyo Disneyland. The Tomorrowland attractions
are both based on a similar attraction called Buzz Lightyear's Space
Ranger Spin, which opened in Tomorrowland at the Magic
Kingdom at Walt Disney World in 1998. Return to Disney News.
