County supervisors on Tuesday approved a plan to dull a convex section of the concert hall's polished silver siding that reflects sunlight, as well as a nearby marquee. The glare from the hall's Founders Room section produces extra heat that overwhelms the air conditioning of residents at the nearby Promenade Towers. Catherine Babcock of the Music Center, which operates the concert hall, says dulling work on the 4,200-square-foot section will take several months. The center will pay for the work, she said. The CalArts Theater marquee, which is also made of polished stainless steel, will be treated as well to stem complaints from motorists and pedestrians, she said. The curving, glittery concert hall in the city's downtown was completed for $274 million in 2003. It was designed by the renowned architect Frank O. Gehry. Return to Disney News.
