Red ants invade Hong Kong's Disney park

Hong Kong - Red fire ants have invaded Hong Kong's under-construction Disney theme park, due to open in seven months, a news report said on Friday.

An ant hill built by the potentially deadly insects, which have been detected repeatedly since last week in Hong Kong, was found near the entrance of the $3-billion theme park, the South China Morning Post said.

Hong Kong is struggling to contain the spread of the aggressive, fast-breeding red fire ants, which have a sting capable of killing the elderly, infants or people with allergic reactions.

They are believed to have entered Hong Kong from neighbouring southern China in potted plants and flowers imported for this month's Chinese New Year holiday.

The ants attack in huge swarms, stinging victims up to 12 times each. They are already endemic across the southern United States, where they do millions of US dollars damage to crops annually.

Nearly 600 ant hills have been found across Hong Kong since the alert was raised over the infestation last week, and officials are fighting to eradicate the nests.

A spokesperson for Disney told the newspaper that the theme park had discovered one nest and destroyed it after consulting government officials.

The Disney theme park is scheduled to open in September and is expected to attract five million visitors in its first year. - Sapa-dpa.
